What is a Swami/Sannyasin/Guru/Spiritual Master?
Subject Syllabus:
Swami / Sannyasin / Sadhu / Guru / Spiritual master Swami (स्वामी) or Swamiji (Swamini in feminine) is an honorary title granted to a Guru or spiritual master who, in addition to following any of the paths of Yoga, follows Sannyasa Yoga (Renunciation) renouncing the Self and thus becoming a Sannyasin. The goal of a Swami or Sannyasin is the realization and liberation of the Self and the pursuit of the well-being of humanity. Generally in Hinduism, the terms Sadhu, Swami and Sannyasin refer to renunciates and spiritual teachers, who have usually left behind all material attachments to live apart from the World. There are a variety of Hindu terms used for these people: “yogis” (those who practice yoga), “gurus” (those who dispel spiritual darkness), “sadhus “ (mendicants), “Swamis” (spiritual teachers), “Rishis” (great sages or yogis) and “ Sannyasins” (Renouncers).
The rest of this summary on “Swamis (Sannyasins)” is available exclusively to students of the Bhagavad Gita Institute Swamis (Sannyasins)
